I Am An Animation Animal

You remember the puppet animation short we were working on in Turun Taideakatemia last Spring? Well I just noticed I never showed you these funniest still photographs we took on the last day of shooting. My idea was to finish the sound design and post production this summer – but life happened. Good life: apprenticeship in Pyjama, painting and illustration projects, holiday travelling and my weekly videos to the Elli Maanpää Art channel. So as I’m leaving to Toronto for the exchange for the Fall semester I will let this film rest in my editing board for a little while longer. But I won’t let it get forgotten since it turned out pretty awesome. It’s going to be released Spring 2018. P.S. If there’s interested producers out there send me an email to elli(at)maanpaa.com.

And talking about my animation work: My 2D drawn animation Point of View will be screened in TAFF Turku Animated Film Festival this week in the Fresh from Finland screening on Thursday the 24th at 8pm and on Sunday the 27th at 1.30pm. I just learned also that the whole screening will be seen in the Helsinki International Film Festival too this Autumn. And that’s pretty awesome. So I think the title of this blog post is well earned, right?

Animation Showreel

It’s pretty overwhelming to comprehend that there is just a month left of my 2nd year of animation studies in Turku Arts Academy. Wow. At this point I feel like I’ve learn a lot and that I have so much more to learn. It was time to make my 1st animation showreel to list the animations I’ve worked on so far. My favourite animation programs at this point are TVPaint, AfterEffects and DragonFrame. I uploaded the showreel both to Youtube and Vimeo so go and take a look. All feedback is warmly welcomed. Thank you.

Taitteessa

I mentioned this project briefly before but now it’s happening. Taitteessa is an short vlog style documentation of Media studies in Turku Arts Academy in Turku University of Applied Sciences. Us four students – Kia, Emilia, Venla and I – filmed our study life during January 2017. Emilia and Venla study Advertisement, Kia studies Journalism and I study Animation. The Taitteessa workgroup edited the material into four times four short episodes. Two first episodes from each of us have already come out. The next episode featuring me will come out on Wednesday on the Turun AMK:n Taideakatemia facebook page. And on Friday on the TurunAMK YouTube page. Below is the trailer. Episodes 1 and 2 you can find by clicking one or two. Enjoy also the selection of my crazy facial expressions in these video thumbnails.

Finishing My Film

My 2D drawn animation Näkökulma – Point of View is almost done. I got the visuals – animation, clean up, coloring and titles – ready last week. Jey! But I still have little bit of sound editing to do. After that it’s completely done and I can call myself animation director for real. How cool is that. Here is couple of screenshots from my film.

Video Mapping In Viborg

Couple of weeks ago I had a chance to participate in a Video Mapping Workshop in Viborg Denmark. Here’s my video documentation from the trip.

The workshop was organized by Euranim. It’s an European project that involves 6 animation schools around Europe. The hosting school for this workshop was The Animation Workshop in Viborg Denmark.

Our lead guru to the magical world of Video Mapping was Tamás Zador from Hungary. Also Lasse Andersen from Denmark englightened us with his video mapping works. The wonderful hostess and coordinator Lana Tankosa Nikolic from TAW made us feel welcomed.

In this workshop there were 13 students participating. We formed 3 groups and each group made 1 minute 52 second long animation. The building Arsenal (in the picture below) was divided to three sections and every group got one section. My group had the left side of the building.

The week was wonderful: exhausting and inspiring. I learned so much. I’m super thankful of the experience. Thank you Euranim and Turku Arts Academy!

My Grand Jewel of Animation: Scene About Gardening

As I promised: here it is. This is the final work I did for our 2D animation class in my school Turku Arts Academy this Spring semester. The task was to create a scene with two characters. The other one had to be a human (my bucket head is considered to have the anatomy of a man). The human has do at least one whole body movement and the other character reacts to that. We were allowed to either work on paper or on TV Paint. I chose the later because I feel it’s quicker, it’s easier to test things if they work or not (and I love using colors).

This is what I came up with. It’s a 20 second long loop. It took me week and half to do. It turned out looking a little like stop motion animation eventhough it is drawn on a wacom. I used my favourite color combination: blues and reds. The story is about gardening. The beauty and the constant work.

So please take a look and let me know what you think. Besides looping gif I made into a video which I downloaded to Youtube and Vimeo. Do you think I should add sound design to the video and make it a “real” short film? Thank you for accompaning my journey as a developing animation artist.

With love, ElliElli_Kukkienkastelu_FINAL.gif
