Draw With Jazza announced the Artsy Tee Design challenge finalists. There were over 800 designs submitted and three finalists chosen. Sadly my design Art Is Not For Ninnies didn’t make the cut. So it was time to take this shirt into my own hands – since I want it so bad. I uploaded the design into my Redbubble store. Now I should just choose between the Women’s Fitted Scoop or Women’s Relaxed Fit T-shirt. What do you think? Which one should I order? You can also comment by participating the Twitter poll.
Art Is Not For Ninnies also on Stickers, Tote Bags and Wall Clocks.

I noticed the art related tee print design challenge by Jazza – from Draw With Jazza YouTube channel – week ago and remembered this tee print design Art Is Not For Ninnies I’ve sketched couple of months ago but never finished. Now I got the perfect opportunity to finish it up. This is a shirt I would proudly wear myself.
The idea behind the design statement is that sometimes people don’t think visual arts for being a real profession. It takes time and dedication to make a hobby into an prospective reality and that applies from professional football to making art. When you put the hours and heart into it, it can turn into a profession. It’s not easy but when you have only one life to live you might as well spent the time working on the things you really want.
Ihan OK! is Ukkosmaine‘s 6th studio album. The title means in English Quite Ok! It’s an album full of new Ukkosmaine disco-rock-pop songs: dance music with optimism and synthetic sounds. But this time there is also a deeper melancholy side to the lyrics. When life is not only fantastic fireworks but with its ups and downs it’s still quite ok.
I was honoured when Wilhelm and Klaus asked me to design illustrations to their album cover and tee-prints. Below you can see preliminary doodles for the cover ideas. I decided to use hand signs which we use to express we’re ok when the words are not enough. The mini-disco-star in the Ukkosmaine catsuit holds on the hand to cope in the big wide world. In the other image the same disco-star gives thumbs-up while flying with his disco-balloon to his dreams. CONTINUES —>
After the sketches were approved I started to work in the illustrator to create vector images. I used Ukkosmaine’s brand colours: pink, yellow and black. As you can see the first colour palette was way too pastel. CONTINUES —>
After I got the colours right I continued colouring in the Photoshop. A added a noise texture to give the illustration a video vibe. Below is the final cover illustration. CONTINUES —>
I also made an black-and-white version of the illustration for a tee-print. You can buy this shirt from here until the 14th of February 2016. CONTINUES —>
I also designed another tee-print for the band. This one is mashup from the songs on the album. As you can see from the not-so-pretty sketch below in right the boys in the band trust me enough to know I create something neat even though my doodles would be little rough. CONTINUES —>
This Ukkosmaine 8-bit print has been a real hit. You can buy your own shirt from here. CONTINUES —>
There is still time until the 14th of February to take part in the Ihan Ok! -mesenaatti funding campaign where you can buy the album, shirts and other super goodies beforehand. Cool thing is that the upcoming album has already raised the sum they were originally looking for but all the extra pennies go for the band to continue keep making the world a better place with their music. So go for it!
Tunnet muusikko Ville Karttusen ennestään Ukkosmaine ja Hullut Hattuset bändeistä, mutta nyt Villellä on oma sooloalbumi tuloillaan. Voit ottaa osaa sooloalbumin mahdollistamiseen Villen Mesenaatti-projektin avulla. Ville pyysi minua suunnittelemaan t-paita printin projektia varten aiheena “Kissa, joka soittaa v-kitaraa”. Alla ensimmäisiä luonnoksia.
You know musician Ville Karttunen from the bands Ukkosmaine and the Hullut Hattuset but now Ville has his own solo album coming out. You can take part in making the album happen trough Ville’s Mesenaatti project. Ville asked me to design him a tee print with the theme “Cat who plays V-guitar”. Below you can see the first drafts.
Villen ohjeistus oli, ettei kissasta saa tulla liian söpö. Lisäsin katu-uskottavuutta epäsymmetrisillä yksityiskohdilla ja maanisella meiningillä. Lisäsin kissalle myös Villen pitkät hiukset.
Ville didn’t want the cat to look too cute. I added street cred by adding asymmetrical details and manic feel. I also added Ville’s long hair to the cat.
Kun olin saanut kuvan piirrettyä käsin mieleiseksi, otin siitä valokuvan ja piirsin kuvan puhtaaksi illustratorilla.
After getting the drawing look the way I wanted I photographed it and drew it over in Illustrator.
Sitten lisäsin vielä yksityiskohtia (mm. VK nimikirjaimet) ja rosoisuutta printtiin. Valmista tuli. Voit ostaa paidan mesenoimalla Villen albumia täällä.
Then I added more details (like the VK initials) and roughness to the print. And it’s done. You can by the shirt by supporting Ville’s album here.
