I Am An Animation Animal

You remember the puppet animation short we were working on in Turun Taideakatemia last Spring? Well I just noticed I never showed you these funniest still photographs we took on the last day of shooting. My idea was to finish the sound design and post production this summer – but life happened. Good life: apprenticeship in Pyjama, painting and illustration projects, holiday travelling and my weekly videos to the Elli Maanpää Art channel. So as I’m leaving to Toronto for the exchange next week I will let this film rest in my editing board for a little while longer. But I won’t let it get forgotten since it turned out pretty awesome. It’s going to be released Spring 2018. P.S. If there’s interested producers out there send me an email to elli(at)maanpaa.com.

And talking about my animation work: My 2D drawn animation Point of View will be screened in TAFF Turku Animated Film Festival this week in the Fresh from Finland screening on Thursday the 24th at 8pm and on Sunday the 27th at 1.30pm. I just learned also that the whole screening will be seen in the Helsinki International Film Festival too this Autumn. And that’s pretty awesome. So I think the title of this blog post is well earned, right?

How to Draw A Teddy Bear (Eating a Banana With Kinder Toy Paint)

This video is dedicated to my nephew Teo. Since we ran out of time to draw this Teddy Bear together this summer – he lives in California and I in Finland – I decided we could do it in this modern telecommuting way. The art supplies I used were a paint set gotten from a Kinder chocolate egg and a red blue pencil.

Are you gonna draw your own Teddy Bear? If you are and want me to see it either send me a note or add a hastag #lookellilook to it in Instagram, Facebook or Twitter and I will check it out.

Sunflower Fields Forever

Vincent Van Gogh painted sunflowers over and over again. Some say it’s because in his time sunflowers were popular decorative theme in art. Paintings with sunflowers were easier to sell. That might be true but for sure not the only reason to Van Gogh’s endless desire to convey the beauty of that golden flower. There is soul in a flower that’s been given a name of the sun. And even when the flower is in the end of his lifespan it still shines like a beautiful memory.

This week’s video is a new episode of What To Draw and – as you might have guessed – the theme was drawing flowers. Enjoy.

Which Tee I Choose?

Draw With Jazza announced the Artsy Tee Design challenge finalists. There were over 800 designs submitted and three finalists chosen. Sadly my design Art Is Not For Ninnies didn’t make the cut. So it was time to take this shirt into my own hands – since I want it so bad. I uploaded the design into my Redbubble store. Now I should just choose between the Women’s Fitted Scoop or Women’s Relaxed Fit T-shirt. What do you think? Which one should I order? You can also comment by participating the Twitter poll.

Art That Sells

This week I had a chance to visit Mikkeli Housing Fair. I spent my time well by studying what kind of art have people put on the walls of their dream houses. I found three recurrent themes: Abstract, Typography and Travel. Back home I combined all of them and came up with my own design: Inspire And Be Inspired. It’s now available in my Redbubble Shop as a wall tapestry, posters and much more. See on this weeks video the visit to Mikkeli and progress of the design. Have a great weekend.

Art Is Not For Ninnies

“Hard work beats talent every time.” – Jake Paul

I noticed the art related tee print design challenge by Jazza – from Draw With Jazza YouTube channel – week ago and remembered this tee print design Art Is Not For Ninnies I’ve sketched couple of months ago but never finished. Now I got the perfect opportunity to finish it up. This is a shirt I would proudly wear myself.

The idea behind the design statement is that sometimes people don’t think visual arts for being a real profession. It takes time and dedication to make a hobby into an prospective reality and that applies from professional football to making art. When you put the hours and heart into it, it can turn into a profession. It’s not easy but when you have only one life to live you might as well spent the time working on the things you really want.
