This week I was inspired to make a second video – a vlog about my last day as a trainee in Pyjama Films Animation Studio and about my trip to Helsinki to the premiere of the Finnish feature film Viraali. I named this new style of videos with the title: ON THE GO. Please let me know if you like to see this kind of videos next to the more art related stuff on my channel. Have an extra lovely summer weekend.
P.S. If you’re in Finland you should definitely go see the film Viraali!
Here I am at the red carpet with my avec the handsome Herra Kuula. Photo credit belongs to Viraali.
Sometimes it’s time for a change and this week was one of them. I chose to redo my profile picture. I used the old photograph loosely as a reference but I added some important extra parts like my cat Cocco the Coconut Boy. Nowadays he does everything with me so he deserves some profile picture coverage. I painted the illustration with gouache, continued with coloured pencils and did some colour adjustments on photoshop. I love how it turned out. How about you?
Acting has always been one of my passions. But as long as my main work has been on creating visuals – art and illustrations – I’ve felt little shy about the actress in me even though I’ve gotten great roles trough castings. Now when I found my way to animation, acting makes so much sense.
The fact I’ve done acting both in films and theatre stage is a huge advantage when animating a character. I can act out emotions and replicate them to my drawings. Skills in improvisation help me out when trying to brainstorm ideas fast. So for now on I’m gonna embrace my love for acting. I’m super excited to be (small) part of two Finnish feature films that will come out this summer: Viraali and Lauri Mäntyvaaran tuuheet ripset. Thank you for these opportunities. Red carpet here I come.
P.S. Meet the poet and snow leopard Leopold from 2013. More photos of my roles in the acting page.
THEATRE – Korkeasaaren Teatteri: Kissainpäivät // Director: Laura Madekivi // Role: Lumileopardi Leopold // 2013
On this week’s video on Elli Maanpää Art I ponder aloud if tracing in art is ok. What do you think? I’d love to hear your comments. While talking about it I speed paint the painting for our puppet animation. The painting – both 3D and 2D version – is inspired by Picasso and Mondrian. I also mention the postcard shop with cat themed postcards. Enjoy!
Remember Joulukorttikauppa: my online Christmas Card Shop? Well it’s not Christmas right now – even though it snowed yesterday in Finland – but I decided to open a Spring edition of the shop. There I sell my non-Christmas postcards and art prints during May 2017.
From the selection you can find postcards for Finnish celebrations like high school graduation and confirmation party but also all kinds of postcards from my illustrations and paintings. I will post the orders on Saturdays. Check also Joulukorttikauppa’s facebook page.
Thank you for checking out my postcard shop. Have an awesome MayDay! Or as they say here in Finland: Hauskaa Vappua!
Wanna build some puppets and then make them act? Yeees. That’s what we have been doing whole spring in school – Animation programme in Turku Arts Academy – with the help of the puppet animation guru Antti Laakso. It’s been super fun. First we crafted the animation puppets from scratch with wire and foam rubber. Then we built and painted the sets. And now finally we are at the studio filming our about 1min short animation about Art Gallery. See more from this 3min making of in Elli Maanpää Art.
I mentioned this project briefly before but now it’s happening. Taitteessa is an short vlog style documentation of Media studies in Turku Arts Academy in Turku University of Applied Sciences. Us four students – Kia, Emilia, Venla and I – filmed our study life during January 2017. Emilia and Venla study Advertisement, Kia studies Journalism and I study Animation. The Taitteessa workgroup edited the material into four times four short episodes. Two first episodes from each of us have already come out. The next episode featuring me will come out on Wednesday on the Turun AMK:n Taideakatemia facebook page. And on Friday on the TurunAMK YouTube page. Below is the trailer. Episodes 1 and 2 you can find by clicking one or two. Enjoy also the selection of my crazy facial expressions in these video thumbnails.
