Love Birds

Love Birds is a commissioned illustration I did for a wedding invitation for a couple that was getting married about one year ago. The choice of the theme, colours and the type of flowers came from the bride. And the choice to add one bug to man up the sugary illustration came from the groom. So the end result is beautifully balanced but oh so romantic. Below couple of making of snaps of the drawings and the final illustration.

Kuppikakkuja

Kuppikakkuja ensi-ilta on la 16.5. klo 19 – eli alle kahden viikon päästä – Helsingin Arabianrannan Bokvillanissa. Minä näyttelen kahvilanomistaja Hannan roolin, jonka kahvilassa näytelmä tapahtuu. Kaikki näytelmän kolme naista kohtaavat elämässään väkivaltaa. Asia pidetään piilossa moninaisin tavoin. Näytelmä on osa Wings to Fly kampanjaa, jossa vastustetaan naisiin ja tyttöihin kohdistuvaa väkivaltaa. Kaikki Kuppikakkuja lipputulot menevät Planille ja heidän kauttaan kehistysmaissa asuvien tyttöjen suojeluun ja koulutukseen.

Kuppikakkuja premier is in the Bokvilla in Arabianranta in Helsinki on the 16th of May at 7pm – so it’s less than two weeks. I play the part of a cafe owner Hanna in whos cafe the play takes place. All the three women of the play encounter violence in their life. They try to keep it hidden in many ways. The play is part of Wings to Fly campaing which is rasing awareness about the violence women and girls encounter. All our ticket income goes straight to Plan and to their work to help and give education the girls in developing countries.

One More Christmas Card

Jee. On Joulukuun ensimmäinen päivä. Joulukorttikaupan korttien lisäksi suunnittelin vielä yhden hieman erilaisen kortin tälle sesongille. Kortin kuvitus on kustomoitua muotoilua Turkulaiselle SM Maanpää Oy:lle, joka tekee pohjatutkimuksia.

Whee. It’s the 1st of December. Besides the Christmas cards for Joulukorttikauppa I designed one more – little different – Christmas card for this season. It’s custom illustration for the company SM Maanpää Oy from Turku which does ground surveying.
christmas_card_illustration_ellimaanpaa_2014

Idea lähti siis pohjatutkimuksesta itsestään: Mitä tapahtuu tapahtuu piilossa maan alla, jotta Joulupuu voidaan rakentaa?

The idea for the illustration came from the ground surveying: What happens below the ground so that Christmas tree can be put up?christmas_card_illustration_ellimaanpaa_2014

Kuvitustyylin pidin yksinkertaisena, geometrisena ja värikkäänä.

The illustration style I kept simple, geometric and colorful.christmas_card_illustration_ellimaanpaa_2014

Ihanaa Joulukuista viikkoa kaikille!

I also want to advertise one Christmas spirit operation: What if you would write Christmas cards/letters for lonely strangers? Aika parantaa -network organizes bee on the Sunday 7th of December in Hyvinvointihuvila Hyppynaru in Kulosaari in Helsinki where everyone can participate on a good deed by writing Christmas cards to strangers. You can also write the cards on your own and send them to Aika parantaa. Here are the instructions. I wrote and sent some cards last week. If you’re like me – a Christmas geek – I promise you that you’ll feel good.

Happy December week for all!

Mona Lisa Gaze

Let’s start this wonderful week with sketch-a-day watercolor painting from August. I named the work Mona Lisa Gaze because the painting resembles her a little even though I didn’t use da Vinci’s Mona Lisa as reference. There is something similar going on on the smize. My lady’s red eye expression is mysterious and kind.monalisagaze_painting_ellimaanpaa_2014

In the close up you can see that besides yellow and red watercolor I used mechanical pencil.

Here is the instagram photograph of the same painting.

Delirious

Can you believe it’s already 1st of September? It’s sad to say good bye to Summer but it’s nice to welcome Autumn after long warm Summer.

Delirious is a sketch-a-day painting I did already in July. But since I did it while visiting Turku and left the piece there I only now had a chance to scan it. In the work I used pencil, red ink and marker.delirious_illustration_ellimaanpaa_2014 copy

Closer look of the details of the face.

Color Your World

Today I’m going to tell you story behind my Color Your World -design and about the new Society6 shop ElliMaanpaa.
1_coloryoyrworld_ellimaanpaa_design_2014

It all started with my new visual art CV. I planned to make it very simple and formal with one exception: I needed one eye catching illustration for the headline. So that the overall look would be little more playful – more like me. That’s how the smiling paint brush vector graphic illustration was created.

2_coloryourworld_cv_brush_2014 copy

I liked the paint brush character so much I started to play around with it. First I created my initial letter E just for fun.

3_E_brush_ellimaanpaa_design_2014

I saw potential in the simple but funny figure so I became more ambitious: I wanted to create a pattern out of it. This pattern below I named as Make Your Own Northern Lights. I used this print in the t-shirts, mugs and clocks.

4_coloryourworld_northernlight_ellimaanpaa_2014

I still continued experimenting. That’s how the stripe version was born. I love stripes in many different forms so it was truly exciting to create a stripe pattern of my own.

Color Your World became the name and message of the design. It’s also my philosophy in life –  the world gives you the outlines of your life that you cannot choose yourself but what you do inside the lines is only up to you. You can color every corner of your life with the color/mood of your preference. Below Color Your World Art Print in Society6.

If you’ve followed my whereabouts before you know that I have an Society6 shop by the name ElliEmiliaTale. So why did I not just post this design there? Why the new shop? The answer is that I have multiple design aesthetics inside me. I love (to make and see) tactile fragile hand drawn illustrations and watercolor paintings which ElliEmiliaTale is all about. But I also love  (to make and see) these bright clean cut vector illustrations that ElliMaanpaa will be about. To honor both styles I wanted to give them own space.

Below from up left Color Your World: Stationery Cards, Mugs, V-neck Shirt and Duvet Cover. There is much more products available in the shop so go take a look.

That’s it for today. Thank you for reading! Have a colorful weekend all!
