Acting Makes Sense

Acting has always been one of my passions. But as long as my main work has been on creating visuals – art and illustrations – I’ve felt little shy about the actress in me even though I’ve gotten great roles trough castings. Now when I found my way to animation, acting makes so much sense.

The fact I’ve done acting both in films and theatre stage is a huge advantage when animating a character. I can act out emotions and replicate them to my drawings. Skills in improvisation help me out when trying to brainstorm ideas fast. So for now on I’m gonna embrace my love for acting. I’m super excited to be (small) part of two Finnish feature films that will come out this summer: Viraali and Lauri Mäntyvaaran tuuheet ripset. Thank you for these opportunities. Red carpet here I come.

P.S. Meet the poet and snow leopard Leopold from 2013. More photos of my roles in the acting page.

Teatteri Kiilas: Kuppikakkuja PR-shoot 2015

Keskiviikkona otimme Teatteri Kiilaan Kuppikakkuja-näytelmää varten PR-valokuvia. Kuvaajana toimi Tommi Rummukainen. Nämä behind-the-scenes kuvat ovat minun ja Lauran ottamia.

Last Wednesday we shot the PR-photos for Teatteri Kiilas‘es play Kuppikakkuja (in Eng. Cupcakes). The photographer was Tommi Rummukainen. These behind the scenes snaps are taken by me and Laura.

Hanna on nuori, sievä, pullantuoksuinen kahvilanomistaja, jonka rakkaussuhde satuttaa.

Kuppikakkuja play tells a story of three very different Finnish women who all face domestic violence in their life. I play the title role – well my name is not cupcake but Hanna. Hanna is young and sweet cafe owner whos love-relationship hurts.Elli Maanpää in Kuppikakkuja play by Teatteri Kiilas 2015

Niina Hartikainen esittää Tessaa, itsenäisyyttä kaipaavaa teini-ikäistä punkkaria, jonka isä on ääliö.

Outi Oinas esittää uraohjus Karoliina, joka suhtautuu väkivaltaiseen avioliittonsa ongelmana johon hänen täytyy löytää ratkaisu. Vapaa-aikanaan hän tekee vapaaehtoistöitä jooga-ohjaajana.

Outi Oinas plays the part of career oriented Karoliina who thinks her abusive marriage is just a problem she has to solve. On her spare time she volunteers as a yoga instructor.

Mitä kaikkea on tehtävä, jotta kulissit pysyisivät pystyssä? Kuppikakkuja-näytelmä on osa Wings to fly -projektia ja kaikki lipputulot menevät hyväntekeväisyyteen. Ensi-ilta on toukokuussa 2015 Bokvillanin kartanossa.

Our play is not only about domestic violence but all the social complexities that come with it. What do you have to do to keep the appearance picture perfect? Kuppikakkuja play is part of Wings to fly project and all the ticket earnings goes to charity. The opening night is in May 2015 in Bokvillan mansion.Make-believe by Elli Maanpää 2015

Nice Girls Don’t Draw Skulls – TRAILER

Today will stay in history since today is the world premiere of the trailer of my new short film Kiltit tytöt eivät piirrä pääkalloja – Nice Girls Don’t Draw Skulls. If you follow me in instagram you maybe have seen glimpses here and there about my process with the film.

The film is about a nice girl who always draws pink bunnies. But then one day something a lot darker appears on her drawing board and she freaks out. To remain as a nice girl she takes a happy bill but that comes with a cost.

I could describe the film as a dark children’s film. It combines speed drawing and acted story.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The message of the film is that no emotions should be denied. That we shouldn’t be afraid of our negative feelings or try to suppress them since that might lead to even worst feelings. Especially if you find an artistic way to deal with your emotions for example trough drawing or writing. This film is dedicated to all the nice girls (and boys) in Finland and elsewhere who try to be perfect in everything but then end up hurting themselves. It’s ok not to be nice all the time.

But the film is also just a film and everyone is allowed to see what ever they want to see in it.The full film Nice Girls Don’t Draw Skulls will have it’s online premiere next Spring the latest.

EDIT: Many days later. Here the film is. Enjoy!

Big And Small Cats

Tonight is the second Night Of The Cats in the Korkeasaari Zoo. I wrote a post about the event last Saturday. So last few weeks been very much about cats – small and big ones – and that can be seen in my sketch-a-day drawings as well. Here are couple of smartphone photographs of the cat adventures of my sketchbook.

First Blue Eye Kitten.

Then this Catwoman – or is it a Cat Lady.

And last but not least the Majestic Tiger. The picture does not do justice for the drawing so I might scan and post a better picture about this sketch later.

I also want you to see this little video I edited from material I filmed during the last Night of the Cats. In it all the characters from our play Kissalaakso High School say hello. It’s in Finnish but if you don’t understand the language you can still enjoy the cool masks (made by Jonna Karlström) and expressions of our felid theatre family. Tonight we have last three shows of the musical. Warmly welcome!

Happy weekend to all!

Theatre In The Night Of The Cats

I was supposed to do this post already yesterday but since it was the busy busy premiere day I just ran out of time. So instead I write the post now when the premiere and half of the shows are already beautifully behind us.

Yesterday was the 1st Kissojen Yö (Eng. Night of the Cats) in the Korkeasaari Zoo in Helsinki and the premiere of our Kissalaakso High School musical by Korkeasaaren Teatteri. The play is written, directed and composed by Lasse Turunen.

Besides acting (more about that one picture later) in the musical I did some of the illustrations we used in the internet marketing like the picture above. It’s a photograph collage I did out of stock free photographs. All the official posters used in zoo are done by their graphic designers but I’m happy they used my illustration and logo font in the posters as well.

We perform the half-hour-long musical three times a night.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I play the part of Amanda who is a geeky leopard from the drama group. Below is Amanda taking an excited selfie on the stage before show time yesterday.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Here below is the whole fantastic cast. There is the drama group (played by me, Linnea Peurakoski and Outi Oinas), the sporty cheerleaders (Henna Helasvuo, Ilona Kuusela, Anni Lampi and Nina Lampi) the cool cheetahs (Juha-Matti Kahilakoski and Niina Hartikainen), the beauty queen snow leopard Susanna (Jutta Järvinen), the dramatic teacher lynx (Laura Madekivi) and the handsome cheetah Justus who all adore (Saban Ramadani).

The 1st Night of The Cats was a success. The island was completely packed for the whole evening. Also our shows were completely full and we received a loud applause every time. People smiled, laughed and thanked us. Absolutely amazing night.

But if you missed our show the 1st time you still have chance to participate to the 2nd Night Of The Cats which is held next Friday on the 12th of September. Welcome! See you there maybe? Meooow.
