Winter in Finland can feel like lifetime in Mordor. There is days when I feel like I’m living in the never ending night surrounded only by darkness. But as you know: light looks the brightest next to a shadow. So when the missed sun rises above the horizon there couldn’t be prettier place to be. Also loved ones, winter treats and drawing are my go to when I’m in need for some extra light. Now there is already promise of Spring in the air and another winter bites the dust. Bye winter. In your darkness you shine.
My this week`s speed drawing Youtube video is done with Winsor & Newton brush markers. I saw this view in Argentina Bariloche back in the 2006 when I was backpacking there. It’s hard to imagine that this dreamy place actually exist but it does.
As you can see in the video my cyan blue marker is pretty much dried out. I said this out loud last week and my boyfriend got me new blue markers for Valentine Day surprise. That was the best gift I could have ever had. Thanks to him there is more brush marker landscapes to come. Hope you enjoy my video.
My 2D drawn animation Näkökulma – Point of View is almost done. I got the visuals – animation, clean up, coloring and titles – ready last week. Jey! But I still have little bit of sound editing to do. After that it’s completely done and I can call myself animation director for real. How cool is that. Here is couple of screenshots from my film.
Since it’s that time of the year that everybody is figuring out what they gonna do when they grow up so I thought I could share some tips on how to get into the Art University of your dreams. It’s in Finnish since I have only applied and been accepted to Universities in Finland so that’s all I know. But I added English subtitles so just click on the CC button to understand what I’m raving about. I’m not claiming to be an expert but as an three-times-applicant I’ve seen some things and wanna share the wisdom. See my ten tips below.
I guess my biggest point is that the school alone cannot give you a career. Only you self can make it happen. So don’t stress about getting into the right school too much.
Thank you for tuning in and have a good one. See you next time with more art.
P.S. The awesome archive material I used on the video is from Archive.org
This weeks Youtube video in my Elli Maanpää Art channel is a coktail of video clips of me working on my very first drawn 2D short film at the University. My film is called Näkökulma – Point of View. It should be ready in two weeks. Oh, I’m so excited.
I was actually filming my study life because I’m taking part in this Taitteessa project where four Turku Arts Academy students vlog about their studies and everything else young people do or/and wonder about. Those episodes will be in Finnish and published in Turku University of Applied Sciences in February-March 2017. I’ll let you know when they are out.
I have a strong work ethic on everything I love to do: art, design, animation. There is the constant need for improvement. I’ve been drawing daily for maybe three years now. Of course I’ve always drawn a lot but about three years ago I started the 365-drawings-a-year challenge. After the year ended I chose to keep on drawing daily but not beat myself up if I miss a day or only doodle something super fast. There is a balance I try to seek. Balance of persistent training and keeping zen.
For the Christmas Holiday I came up with a new challenge for myself. I had this old sketchbook that I decided to fill during the two week holidays. My aim was to draw a lot of landscapes since I want to be better at drawing the backgrounds. In the end it took little longer but I managed to fill this sketchbook in 24 days. If you wanna see how it turned out take a look below.
