HELENE20 -Interview | 2020 | Art Project by Helsinki Hospital
The HELENE20 art project featured 6 young contemporary artists interpreting the light and shadow of the pandemic era, inspired by Finnish artist Helene Schjerfbeck's work. The exhibition aims to reflect the emotional complexities of the times, showcasing modern artistic expressions alongside Schjerfbeck's legacy. The project was featured across various media outlets, including radio and online platforms.
The six HELENE20 artists—Elli Maanpää, Emilio Mäkipää, Janne Jääskeläinen, Aura Latva-Somppi, Marika Schulze, and Alma Peltola—posing in the exhibition space in Helsinki.

All six HELENE20 project participants—Elli Maanpää, Emilio Mäkipää, Janne Jääskeläinen, Aura Latva-Somppi, Marika Schulze, and Alma Peltola—pose together in the exhibition space in 2020. The exhibition, organized by Helsinki Hospital, was inspired by Helene Schjerfbeck's Self-portrait, light and shadow, reflecting the light and shadow of the pandemic year

The HELENE20 project included a video interview where participating artists, including Elli Maanpää, engaged in a symbolic “conversation” with Helene Schjerfbeck’s original Self-portrait, light and shadow.

In this HELENE20 project video, Elli Maanpää discusses her choice to paint a portrait of a young Helene Schjerfbeck on a recycled, broken mirror. She explains how the reflective surface invites the viewer to see themselves alongside Schjerfbeck, adding a personal dimension to the artwork. Maanpää also reflects on how brokenness is not an abnormality, but something that makes us all unique.
