ORNAMO TEOSMYYNTI 2025
Finlandia Hall, Helsinki, Finland
6.1.-22.2.2025
Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of showcasing my new painting series, "Muñeca," at Ornamo Teosmyynti 2025, held at the beautifully renovated Finlandia Hall in Helsinki and online.
The series consists of 10 original paintings that reflect on the longing for innocence. The title "Muñeca"—Spanish for "doll," and also a slang word for something lovely—sets the tone for the playful yet powerful nature of these works. Each piece channels a mix of softness and strength: as cute as kittens, as clever as a chessboard, and as resilient as Finnish sisu.
Painted on bamboo leaf plates, the works carry a unique three-dimensional texture that stands out from traditional materials like canvas or paper. The rounded forms of the plates reminded me of bubble gum pillows, adding to the whimsical yet thoughtful aesthetic of the series.
Although the 2025 exhibition has ended, you can still explore the collection.
A Harmonious Palette of Playful Colors
The series includes five paintings in red and pink tones, and five in blue. The blue pieces celebrate the reopening of Finlandia Hall, reflecting the colors of the Finnish flag. Despite the different color bases, all paintings share a unified palette: the blue-based dolls have rosy red cheeks, and the red-pink-based dolls feature blue in their hair and details. This harmony makes them suitable for individual purchase or as a complete set for larger spaces.
I drew inspiration from various sources, including the Moulin Rouge musical, which influenced the ideas and style of these paintings. They evoke the charm of forgotten fairytale illustrations, ready to convey whatever story the viewer or collector wishes to express.
