YAYOI KUSAMA – THE ARTIST
Yayoi Kusama (b. 1929) is a Japanese contemporary artist who works primarily in sculpture and installation but she is also active in painting, performance, film, fashion, poetry and other arts. Her trade mark is painting the word with polka dots.
Kusama was born in Japan but she moved to New York City in 1958 because she was fascinated about American Abstract impressionism. She was part of the NYC avant-garde art scene trough out the 1960s. She has been acknowledged as one of the most important living artists to come out of Japan.
My portrait painting of her is based on this (CC BY 4.0) photograph taken of her when she received the honour Person of Cultural Merit from the Order of Culture 2016.
YAYOI KUSAMA AND ME
I saw Yayoi Kusama’s retrospective exhibition “In Infinity” in Moderna Museet in Stockholm in 2016. Here’s a little video vlog from the visit. Like everyone who visited her “Infinity room” there was no turning back: I became a Kusama fan for life there and then.
