How to make a repeat pattern has been on my video ideas -list for a year. Finally this spring I asked in my Instagram stories if it would be something people would like to see. They answered 100% YES.
So here we go. Fresh from the rendering oven. How to Make a Repeat Pattern -tutorial.
I re-found my love for patterns trough this book Designing Patterns by Lotta Kühlhorn. I say re-found since graphic design for textiles was one of my favourite subjects when I was studying Fashion Design in the Aalto-University. I even did an internship in Paris designing prints for the textile industry in France. Oh that summer in Paris was magical.
There is some similarities in creating a repeat pattern and looping animation. In both cases you need to find how to make the seams appear organic and aesthetic.
For the video I designed three new repeating patterns with two colour variations of each. I uploaded them to my Redbubble shop. You can just click the image to see the pattern on products.
MEMPHIS BIRTHDAY CAT
This design was born from the doodles I did for the hand drawn pattern. I wanted to demonstrate the logic behind the repeating pattern before taking over Photoshop. I made Memphis Birthday Cat -pattern in a Navy and Turquoise colour palette. The illustrations were created in Adobe Illustrator and the pattern composed in Photoshop.
Since I love red I wanted to create something red for myself. When I asked in Instagram which colour of the Dreamy Clouds -pattern is their favourite it was the Pale Watermelon that got more love. It does look so summery and cool. This pattern was drawn digitally on Wacom directly in Photoshop.
SUNRAY TROUGH THE VENETIAN BLIND
The last – but not least – is this geometric pattern Sunray Trough the Venetian Blind -pattern I did by combining stripes and circles in Photoshop. The colours reminded me of summer morning by the lake side and summer night in a city. Can you see which one is which?
